Young tennis enthusiasts from all the UAE emirates flocked in large numbers to Sharjah to participate in the fourth edition of the Coral Beach Resort Sharjah annual Junior Tennis Tournament that concluded on Saturday evening (March 10).
The two-day tournament was a competitive yet fun-filled experience for aspiring tennis champions who participated in four categoriesfor boys and girls -under 10, 12, 14 and 18 years - withCoach Philip on hand to guide them and offer tips.
“They were all champions,” observedJean Pierre Simon, Regional General Manager for the Northern Emirates, Coral Hotels & Resorts. “Tennis fever wasin the air–it was palpable. You could feel the excitement and the never-die spirit of the youngsters who were all pumped up to give off their best. I think the recently concluded Dubai Duty Free Tennis, which saw some really exciting, high calibre matches between the world’s top men’s and women’s players, contributeda lot to keeping the adrenaline flowing freely,” he added.
Sponsored by Dar Al Khaleej, Gulf News and Sharjah Golf & Shooting Club, the tennis fest witnessed the participation of over 38 players, with the elimination rounds being conducted on March 9 and the finals taking place on March 10, followed by the awards ceremony. The winners in each age category went home with a certificate, T-shirt, AED 300 in addition to their medals, while all those who competed were awarded certificates of participation.
“It’s all about competition these days, whichever way you look. Youngsters have stars in their eyes. There’s no denying that the competitive spirit is important and our junior tournament is a platform for them to move onto ranking competitions, especially since we are affiliated to Tennis Emirates (TE), the governing body of tennis in the UAE. The ever-increasing numbers we have been attracting with each passing year reflects the growing popularity of the tournament,” Jean Pierre pointed out.
“But for us, there’s another side to sport and tennis – the joy of participating and imbibing the spirit of the game. That’s what we try to keep in focus and that’s the way it’s been in all our previous junior tournaments. That’s also why we have a coach on hand to guide the youngsters along the correct path. What’s important for us is putting across the message of staying fit and enjoying a healthy lifestyle and we’ve been consistently using our facilities to promote sport, health and wellness,” he added.
The Coral Beach Resort -Sharjah is very popular with business and leisure travellers, as seen in the 85 percent occupancy the hotel achieved in 2011.
“But that doesn’t mean we don’t keep an eye open for families and children. Our range of leisure and fitness activities are for all ages and includes a children’s pool, indoor playroom and Kid’s Club, two outdoor swimming pools, as well as tennis, badminton and volleyball courts,” Jean Pierreexplains.
